Bermudian Roy Richardson is reaching for higher heights in New York.Mr Richardson recently finished a masters degree in music from New York University and rather than waiting for work to come his way, he and a group of other artisans decided to create some work of their own with a new film called “Welcome to Harlem”.Some of the cast members will be on-Island tonight to raise funds at the Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge & Café on Court Street at 8pm.“We are looking for anyone who would be interested in a project like ours to not only attend, but also support. Up until now, most of our support has come from ordinary people in Harlem.”“Welcome To Harlem”, which is set to launch at the Apollo Theater in November, is more than just a movie, it’s more then just a musical and more than just a comedy.“Welcome to Harlem is a collaboration of artists who have decided to work together to share, create, learn and help. Together we are producing something extraordinary. This movie proves that people do not have to wait for work to come and find them, but can create work for themselves and in turn for others enjoyment.”Mr Richardson has taken many titles within the films’ production.“I am working on the film as an actor, as casting director, director of vocal performance and composer of two of the 19 songs.“All of the writing, music, art, choreography, is 100 percent original material.“We are currently in pre-production. Principal photography will take place from March 15 to April 30 this year, and the film is scheduled to premiere in November.”The movie is about love, friendship and community, and how a group of transplants become one with their community and how the community changes them and vice versa.“While there have been countless stories about Harlem, ours is unique in that it captures what is happening right now through the eyes and hearts of those currently experiencing it,” he said.“The story has yet to be told from the perspective of the new residents of Harlem.“Welcome to Harlem is funny, edgy, unorthodox, insightful and creative. Though not easy to send a positive, meaningful message that resonates with people, ‘Welcome to Harlem’ is able to accomplish it through humour, music and showing people something different from anything they have ever seen before.“With ‘Welcome To Harlem’ we have been trying to involve the community as much as possible with all aspects of the production.“In fact, our primary source of funding has come from ordinary people who were interested in being involved.”Mr Richardson has been living in New York for quite a while.“Now I am pursuing my dream of becoming a Broadway actor.“I have been blessed to work in a few off-Broadway shows, and have taken part in some regional shows.“With ‘Welcome to Harlem’ we are trying to change the perception that people have about Harlem, it is something that could work and needs to happen with our very own Court Street, this is one of the reasons that we are working with the Chewstick Foundation.”
