Health first: Bermudian nurse Nia Williams isn't only passionate about her work but also her workouts

Exercise, work and teaching may sound like a hectic slate of daily activities for some, but nurse Nia Williams easily fits it all in.Ms Williams believes she was programmed in the womb to love exercise.“My mother Janet Williams was an aerobics instructor and she worked right up until the time she had me,” said the 37-year-old.“When I was born she continued to work. I sat in my little pumpkin seat and watched as she gave her classes.”Ms Williams’ father Sensei Burnell Williams is a well-known fitness, bodybuilding and martial arts expert. At 77, he continues to train people and was featured in Body and Soul’s Summer Shape Up series on July 10.Ms Williams is a caseworker with the African American Health Program. She works in the area of child and maternal health in Montgomery County, Maryland. She works from 8am to 5.30pm five days a week and is also an adjunct faculty member for Washington Adventist University and three historically black universities Coppin State University, Morgan State University and Bowie State University. She teaches nursing students clinical courses in maternity nursing, medical surgical nursing, nursing leadership, community health nursing and paediatric nursing. She starts every day with a workout at 6.30am. By 8am she is at work, managing e-mails, phone calls and paperwork. She said she tries to consult with three to four clients every day. From 5pm to 11pm she’s teaching or overseeing nursing students in a hospital. On days where she may not have a university class she’s likely teaching a childbirth class.“And in between client visits I go to meetings. They are on a variety of issues for example infant mortality or child safety. I give presentations at schools, camps and the YMCA, on STDs,” she said. She said she enjoys having something to do.“I’d get bored otherwise,” she said. “None of it feels like actual work to me. I am blessed to have found much diversity within the noble profession of nursing, and for that I give God thanks.“I enjoy working out at my neighbourhood gym where I participate in every class offered on the schedule five days per week. If fitness is my addiction, I make no apologies, for it is in my nature. I tell myself all the time that fitness is about getting my shape, in shape. If I focus on looking like someone else, I will be defeated in my personal goals from the start. [My advice to others is] all things in moderation and just enjoy life. We only get to live it once.”
