Burglars steal scholarship money

Burglars broke into the Daylesford Theatre.

Burglars broke into a theatre and stole scholarship money earmarked for Bermuda’s best young performers. The break-in happened at the Daylesford Theatre in Hamilton in the early hours of Monday morning, when about $500 was taken.Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society president Nathaniel Butterfield told The Royal Gazette the thieves took the till drawer from the bar, plus a jar full of cash tips.“The drawer probably didn’t have very much in it, I’m guessing about $100,” he said. “They also stole a large jar which had probably $300 or $400, which is the money for the BMDS Charitable Trust.“Because our bar staff are volunteers, the tips go to the BMDS Charitable Trust. They have basically stolen from a charity. It’s very disappointing.”The Trust offers scholarships and bursaries for Bermudian drama, music and dance students.Mr Butterfield said: “We’ll do our best to make it up. We try to give four or five scholarships a year. Five hundred dollars would buy you a lot of books and help somebody learn so they can contribute to Bermuda’s cultural landscape.”He said the burglars kicked the front door in and caused damage by rifling through drawers to look for valuables.“I’d be surprised if they got away with more than $500,” he said. “We’ll change our practices so the next person won’t get that much. We have an alarm system being installed and we’ve had the front door seen to.”Mr Butterfield said he was very pleased with the swift response from police after he reported the break-in on Monday afternoon, adding that forensic officers took samples from the scene.Anyone with information about the burglary should call Bermuda Police Service on 295-0011 or the confidential and anonymous Crime Stoppers line on 800-8477.Donations to the trust can be sent to: BMDS Charitable Trust, PO Box DV 631, Devonshire DV BX.Useful websites: www.bmds.bm, www.bps.bm.
