The money is to endow a half scholarship in perpetuity at the Reading Clinic to be named after the charity.

Funds were raised by the sale of the League's cookbook and Christmas cards, the Martha Stewart Lecture and Trade Show, the Annie premiere and a Christmas craft sale at St. George's.

The Reading Clinic presently has 58 students, including two adults. Of those, 19 students hold scholarships to assist with the cost of tutoring.

There are 23 active tutors and an anticipated 15 tutors will be available as a result of a course conducted by Mrs. Alice Garside later this month.

They will have to continue training with Tutor Supervisor of the Reading Clinic, Mrs. Gillian Ramsdale before they are certified to tutor students.

Vice president of the Reading Clinic, Cdr. Geoffrey Kitson said: "The Junior Service League have always actively supported the Reading Clinic and over the years have donated to the building, furnishings, special equipment and scholarships.

"This donation, when invested, will produce the funds annual for the Bermuda Junior League Scholarship.''
