String of offences sends 18-year-old off road for a year
A string of driving offences yesterday cost an 18-year-old man $875 in fines and his driver's licence for 12 months.
Jermaine Saltus, of Cochrane Road, Sandy's Parish, appeared in Magistrates' Court and pleaded guilty to failing to exhibit a proper plate on his cycle, driving while disqualified by age, driving in a manner dangerous, driving an unlicensed motorbike, driving an uninsured motorbike and possessing cannabis.
Police saw Saltus driving a purple Yamaha east along Middle Road in Southampton, Police prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said.
Saltus was chased in a marked Police car, but he ignored their siren.
The chase continued down Tribe Road 5, where Saltus ignored a stop sign, Sgt.
Grant said, and continued on past the US Naval Annex, where he ignored another stop sign.
He turned onto the Railway Trail where he was forced to stop, and Police caught up with him, Sgt. Grant said.
The Police noticed that Saltus was very nervous when they mentioned taking him to the Police Station.
Saltus was searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act, and a twist of paper containing plant material was found in his pocket.
The material was later found to be .57 grams of cannabis.
Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis fined Saltus $25 for not exhibiting his licence number plate, $100 for driving while disqualified by age, $100 for driving an unlicensed motorbike, $200 for driving without insurance, $100 for possession of cannabis, and $350 for driving in a dangerous manner. He also banned Saltus from driving for a year.
