promises to be a faculty concert with a difference.

"This will definitely be lighthearted occasion,'' promises voice teacher Julianne Cross. "We are presenting popular classical works and jazz in a programme of music that should have a very wide appeal. And, as it's Halloween season, we're also encouraging the audience to come in costume!'' Dr. Cross, who joined the faculty last year, has worked closely with Dr. Karol Sue Reddington in organising the City Hall event which includes numbers by Vic Glazer (another faculty member) and his Jazz Trio, including Stan Gilbert on bass and Ronnie Lopes on drums.

Dr. Cross, a versatile singer who happily crosses the musical divide from classical to popular, will sing such favourites as `That Ol' Black Magic', `Blues in the Night', and `Art is Calling Me'. There is also a change of pace and style for pianist Dr. Reddington, who will play William Bolcom's `The Graceful Ghost Rag' and will join forces with the singer when they perform Flanders and Swann's `A Word On My Ear'.

Also appearing will be well known violinist Joan Stuart who, with Karol Sue Reddington on piano, will perform Dvorak's `Romance'. Nikki Herbst, who has joined the Conservatory as a piano teacher will play Handel's `Passacaglia in Minor' and Suzuki violin teacher Jennifer Sheridan and Nikki Herbst will play the `Scherzo in C Minor' by Brahms.

Dr. Cross, who obtained her doctorate from the University of Illinois, and majored in Voice with a minor in Choral Conducting and Literature, served there as assistant professor of voice for two years. Prior to that she was a lecturer at the University of Hawaii.

As a performer, Dr. Cross typically tackles a wide range of music, from early to modern, and even pop music. In Hawaii, she was the solo soprano with the Matsuri Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven's Choral Symphony on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of peace between the US and Japan. She was also soprano soloist for in Schoenberg's String Quartet in F for the ARTS2000 series and then in Oliver Knussen's `Trompeten'. At the Illinois Opera Theatre, she sang the role of the Countess in Mozart's `The Marriage of Figaro', directed Benjamin's `The Devil Take Her' and was assistant director of Puccini's `La Rondine'.

During her years in Hawaii, Dr. Cross became deeply involved in the musical scene, most recently singing the role of Frasquita in Bizet's `Carmen'. She sang Violetta in `La Traviata' with the Hawaii Philharmonic Orchestra and was awarded a State Theatre award for her performance as Nettie Fowler in the Honolulu Community Theatre's production of `Carousel'. She was also the co-founder and soprano in Voices IV, a vocal quartet performing in both the classical and popular genres.

For 11 years, she was the soprano section leader of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and was also invited to sing with the Royal Hawaiian Band.

`Halloween Hullabaloo' takes place at City Hall on Saturday, October 24 at 7 p.m. Tickets at $10 are available from Opus 1/Encore, Meyer Travel, Pianos Plus and the Bermuda Conservatory of Music.
