Storm to meet Suns in basketball final

Defending women's basketball champions St. George's Storm fought back to defeat Hamilton Parish Hurricanes, while undefeated Warwick Suns held off Somerset Hornets in the final seconds in last week's league semi-finals.

The final takes place tonight at Bermuda College from 6.30 p.m.

St. George's 38

Hamilton Parish 33

Looking to make it into the final for the second successive year, St. George's Storm found themselves down early against Hamilton Parish.

Led by guard Jahkenya Trott, Parish took an early 13-5 lead but St. George's took advantage of their second chance opportunities to score back to back lay-ups after a series of missed shots to pull within three.

Two jump shots by Jamila Godwin extended the Hurricanes' lead to seven.

In the closing minutes, St. George's went on a 8-4 run but it was Parish who led 23-19 at the half.

The Storm would eventually find their shooting touch as leading scorer Kimale Evans hit back-to-back lay-ups to pull her team within two points.

Parish raised their defensive intensity to create points off turnovers and with three minutes left they looked to hold their 32-25 edge.

St. George's guard Jamila Mallory, however, levelled the scores down the stretch and despite having a series of opportunities at the basket to score, Parish fell short.

The lead they held for 34 minutes soon evaporated as St. George's rallied back in the closing minutes to take the victory.

Warwick 25

Somerset 19

Warwick Suns continued their undefeated streak this season to return to the final, although Hornets were determined to challenge every step of the way.

Looking to be the first team in the league to go undefeated and win a league championship, Suns came out fast but with the recent addition of 16-year-old Atlanta High School for Girls player Nia Robertson, Hornets were able to push the tempo and tie the game in the early minutes.

The two sides would struggle for most of the half as both teams' defensive intensity remained high. In the closing minutes of the half, Suns went on a 4-0 run to give them a 12-8 interval lead.

In the second half, Robertson hit back to back jump shots to tie the game in the early minutes.

Hornets took their first lead of the game with a base-line shot from the corner from Robertson but Suns guard Arkeita Fubler scored two transition lay-ups to put her team back into the lead by two points.

Suns were able to find their shooting range in the final minutes. After trailing by two points with three minutes remaining, Suns forward Stacia Ming hit an acrobatic lay-up to tie the game at 19-19.

A three-pointer and jump shot by Fubler followed and gave the Suns a five-point lead. Warwick held the Hornets scoreless in the final minute to run out winners 25-19.
