Young milers get charge
Electric Mile events on Saturday at the National Stadium.
Some 740 youngsters, in age groups from four years to 13-15, registered for the event which began with the 13-15 boys and girls combined race which was won by Henry Talbot of Saltus in 7:21.
Second was Jelani Douglas of Sandys middle school in 8:02 and Jahmai Lottimore in 8:29. In the girls section Tiffany Eatherley was first in a time of 8:15, followed by Jennifer Young in 8:31 and Cheri Minors in 9:38.
The second section of races again proved popular with the crowd of parents and relatives as Ashley Taylor-Bean won the four-year-old girls 400 metres race in 2:20. Derrika Simons was second in 2:39, just a second ahead of Haley Telford.
Dashun Swan just narrowly pipped Troyan Smith to win the four-year-old boys race in 2:24.
Jachante Wilson was first in the five-year-old girls, covering the 400 metres in 2:01, followed closely by Camille Simons.
The boys five-year-old race was just as close as Tymon Daniels was first in 1:54, followed by Dennzel Crockwell in 1:57.
Venicia Raynor of Heron Bay led home the six-year-old girls in 3:55, followed by Sherilyn DeStefano in 4.00. In the boys race in the same age group, Jahmiko Watson won in 3:39 while Teniko Eve was second in 3:41.
The final set of races on the track saw Carika Weldon win the seven-year-old girls 800 metres in 3:37, two seconds ahead of Danlia Martin.
Bruce Simons was the boys seven-year-old winner in a time of 3:25 while Bradley Simons was second in 3:29 and Kijuan Hudson third in 3:30.
In a one mile race for the 8-9 girls, Ashley Brooks placed first in 8:44 while Shiane Nisbett was second in 8:52 and Brittany Pitt third in 9:01. Cody Lima continued his dominance in the 8-9 race when he won in 7:48, followed by Kamel Bashir of West End in 8:07 and Carlo Paynter of Somerset Primary in 8:10.
Flora Duffy took top honours in the 10-12 girls mile with a winning time of 8:10 while Tene Dowling was second in 8:43 and Donneka Simmons third in 8:48.
Terrence Dill of Dellwood led home the 10-12 boys in 7:18, while Coyatito Smith and James Lister were second and third in 7:27 and 7:37.
