Somerset bid is foiled as match ends in draw
Somerset 214-9 Somerset made a determined bid to snatch the cup from holders St. George's before Saturday's Colts Cup Match ended in a draw with the hosts still 20 runs from victory.
St. George's obviously felt they were in an unbeatable position when captain Ross Dowling declared at 3.48. But Somerset, led by 68 from opener Steven Arorash and with 23 from three other players, made a gallant reply to take the match down to the wire.
Arorash and Shawn Riley (13) added 50 for the first wicket before Arorash and K.Thompson (23) posted 63 for the second wicket to put up the 100. Somerset had a slight hiccup as three wickets went down for 11 runs as Dowling, with his medium pacers, claimed all three wickets on his way to four in the match for 43 from 10 overs.
However, a stand of 38 for the fifth wicket stand of 38 got Somerset back on track as they resumed their push for victory.
In the end, though, they fell just short as the final 20 overs ran out at 6.57 with the last pair at the crease and 20 still needed for victory.
Supporting Dowling in the bowling was Kameron Fox with three for 64 from 11 overs.
Earlier the St. George's batting has been led by Sammy Robinson's 77 after coming in at 22-3. Robinson and Rudell Pitcher (56) carried the score from 79-4 to 167 before Pitcher departed. Robinson was sixth out on 218, one of the four wickets taken by opener K.Furbert who had four for 48 off 17 overs. Riley claimed three for 36 from six overs.
