Sub Dill sends Blazers crashing

Somerset substitute Jermaine Dill took advantage of a goalkeeping error to condemn Boulevard to their second successive Premier Division defeat at St David's yesterday.

Dill had only been on four minutes when he squeezed the ball home from an acute angle in the 71st minute after Blazers keeper Antoine Tuzo lost control of it in bizarre fashion.

Tuzo had gone flying to his left to seemingly hold Steven Mendes' excellent swerving 25-yard effort, but as he hit the ground, the ball squirmed free and Dill turned it in for the only goal of the game.

The winner was always likely to come from a mistake in a game littered with misdirected passes, defensive lapses and featuring two attacks which seemed reluctant to make the most of some fairly clear-cut chances.

Boulevard had by far the better of the first half, with a strong wind behind them and Somerset's decision to play Karl Roberts in a midfield role made them look vulnerable at the back.

But Somerset went closest to opening the scoring as Mendes worked a one-two with Franklyn Simmons on the right edge of the Boulevard area and when the ball came back to him in space he screwed it just wide of Tuzo's right hand post.

Two minutes later, in the 10th minute, Tuzo lost the ball from Nadir Wade's cross and Shaun Riley turned it across goal but wide.

Boulevard should have taken the lead after 12 minutes when Shakia Crockwell was left completely unmarked as Vernon Eve's corner was swung over but he headed against the underside of the bar from five yards.

The woodwork got a workout at the other end too when Wade's cross shot came back off the angle of post and bar.

Stevie Wade began to take control of midfield for the home side but a lot of his good work was wasted by the Boulevard forwards.

Somerset made a change at the interval, pulling off Leslie Trew and replacing him with left sided midfielder Arthur Tucker and returning Roberts to his rightful place in the centre of defence.

The ploy worked well as Boulevard disappeared as an attacking force, although Lamaul Crofton was amazed to see referee Lyndon Raynor award only a goal kick when Keenan Tucker seemed to trip him.

It was only in the last moments of the game that Boulevard looked likely to rescue a point as Jahmel Samuels' 22-yard blast was blocked by Tucker and then fellow substitute Cashlin Dill forced the goalkeeper to scramble clear at the foot of his far post.

It says something for the quality of the football that the accidental tripping of a sprinkler switch moments before half-time, which sent water onto the field from various locations, was the most exciting occurrence in the first half.

Both teams were missing key players, and it showed as chances were few and far between. Village had striker Elliott Jennings out through injury and full back Rahji Edness with a one-match ban while Wolves were without three starters from their last outing against Somerset -- Mark Ray, Lanario Simmons and Leonard Hypolite, the latter among the substitutes.

Wolves went close after six minutes when Nirobi Smith's cross from the left touched the fingertips of goalkeeper Gladwin Edness but there was no one following up at the far post to finish off the move.

At the other end Kentoine Jennings' header just missed the far post. Then Neil (Diamond) Robinson blasted straight at goalkeeper Cymande Davis after cutting into the box on the left side.

In a bid to boost a rearguard that had conceded three goals in each of their last three games, Wolves switched Nakia Smith back into the heart of the defence in the absence of Simmons. But at the same time they were robbed of one of their best attacking players.

Village had the bulk of the second half chances but they badly lacked the finishing touch inside the box. Davis was off his line to block a shot from Marlon Dill early in the second half and a few minutes later, with one of their best moves, Robinson blasted well wide after Kevin Jennings had laid the ball into his path from a Cal Dill free kick.

Wolves haven't won a game since beating Village in the semi-finals of the Martonmere Cup on October 12 and there is plenty of work facing coach Dennis Brown ahead of Thursday's final against Dandy Town.
