Work starts on new Court space

The courts are being prepared for upcoming high-profile Supreme Court trials starting this spring. In one the Thyssen-Bornemisza family are fighting over control of $2.8 billion of assets in a Bermuda-based trust. In the other action the liquidators of Bermuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co. Ltd. are suing for the return of shares in BF&M Insurance Co. Ltd.

Booth Memorial Hall is the former headquarters of the Salvation Army. Works and Engineering Minister Alex Scott was not available to comment on the refurbishment. There are three courts currently available for Supreme Court cases.

Because of a lack of space pre-trial hearings in the Thyssen-Bornemisza case was located at Cathedral Hall on Church Street. That case is expected to last six months while the Bermuda Fire action is expected to run for four months.

Government has recently advertised to hire someone as assistant justice to help out with the cases. Earlier this year former Hong Kong Queen's Counsel Denis Mitchell, who has commercial law experience, was appointed as Puisne Judge in Supreme Court.
