Skipper's declaration backfires as Cleveland crash

Flatts 204-6 To declare and then lose -- to their Eastern Counties rivals of all teams -- isn't something Cleveland will be allowed to forget for a while.

Yesterday at Devonshire Rec., captain Peter Philpott was confident his team could defend 201 runs when he declared at 3.45. However, the absence of main strike bowler Albert Simons and the size of the field worked against the Harris Bay team as Flatts set about a run chase that kept the attention of a large crowd right down to the first ball of the last over when the score was crossed.

Cleveland had a good start when they removed Millard Bean with just 16 on the board. But they then had to wait 95 runs before the next two wickets fell, after a second wicket stand between Troy Dean (57) and Rodney Woolridge (67) had kept Flatts in the match.

Cleveland then removed Derek Wright, Braxton Stowe and Gerald Simons cheaply as Flatts moved on to 172-6 with the game still delicately balanced. But that was to be the last wicket taken by Cleveland as Aaron Woolridge dominated an unbeaten seventh wicket stand of 32 with Troy Bean.

Woolridge finished with 36 not out, which came from five fours and two sixes.

Cory Lowe was the best of the Cleveland bowlers, taking four for 28 off 12 overs.

Earlier openers Grant Smith (41) and Curtis Jackson (43) put on 69 for the first wicket before knocks of 35 from Lowe and 27 from Del Hollis enabled them to reach their declaration total.

Troy Dean claimed four for 28 off 12 overs and Wright two for 24 for Flatts.

Nationals 189 St. George's 192-3 St. George's made it two wins in two outings with this convincing seven wicket triumph at Nationals.

Nationals reached 189 in 58.1 overs with Jason Lewis, having his first knock in two years, leading the way with 46.

Lewis made St. George's pay after Ryan (Droopy) Steede dropped him on the boundary in his first over. Steede finally made amends, catching him in the deep off David Adams to deny him a half century.

After restricting Nationals to 136-9, St. George's had to wait a further 37 minutes before claiming the final wicket, as James Thomas (18) and Bruce Perinchief (34) frustrated the East Enders in a stand of 53. Others contributing to the Nationals score were Mark Ray with 23 and Brandon Woolridge with 25, having struck 85 not out the day before as Nationals beat Social Club by 93 runs.

Adams led the St. George's bowlers with five for 51 while Steede, opening with Gregg Foggo, claimed three for 35. Foggo had figures of one for 11 from seven overs, six of which were maidens.

St. George's lost the early wicket of Eugene Foggo who fell to left-arm medium pacer Alan Corcoran with just seven on the board. However, a second wicket stand of 85 between opener Dean Minors (49) and Clay Smith (79 not out) soon had the runs coming fluently.

Minors hit eight fours and a six in his 86 minutes at the crease while Smith, who added 63 with Ricky Hodsoll (36 not out) in an unbroken fourth wicket stand, stroked seven fours and two sixes. Corcoran claimed two for 51 while spinner Bruce Perinchief took the other wicket after bowling 20.3 overs.

Devonshire 113 Bailey's Bay 114-3 Champions Bailey's Bay improved on their draw on Saturday against Willow Cuts with their first win of the season, a resounding seven wicket triumph over Devonshire Rec. at Sea Breeze Oval.

Devonshire could only manage 114, having recovered from losing opener Lloyd Smith with just one on the board with a second wicket stand of 46 between Donald Norford (17) and Anthony Amory (28). The visitors quickly slumped to 53-5 before Erskine Smith (16) and Toriano Henry (19) carried them to 86.

Clarkie Trott and Corey Hill each took four wickets, for 20 and 25 respectively, while Glenn Smith had two for 29.

Bay needed just 22.5 overs to reach their target as captain Chris Smith led the way with 36 not out and vice captain Glenn Smith hit 44. Ricky Hill was not out on 17.

Social Club 101 St. David's 102-2 New captain Lionel Cann led from the front with both bat and ball as St.

David's romped to an eight wicket victory over Social Club at Lord's yesterday.

In his first match at the helm, Cann first took four for 27 off 21 overs as Social Club barely got past 100 despite being 84-4 at one stage. Their innings fell apart badly after the sixth wicket tumbled on 100 as the last five went down for just one run in 20 minutes, four claimed by Cann.

High man for Social Club was captain Webster Mills with 18.

Reginald Pitcher supported his skipper with three for 14, while the captain and his deputy made sure that victory was short and swift. Cann hit 32 not out while Shea Pitcher scored 28 not out.
