Bajan policeman Ferdinand Thorne struck a half-century in his first trial at Somerset as Andre Manders' team defeated the team captained by his brother-in-law Perry Maybury by 12 runs in a 50-overs match on Saturday.

After openers Ricky Hill and Dwayne Basden were removed in successive overs by Maybury and Terry Burgess when the score was 18, Thorne carried his team to their total with an unbeaten 81 from 122 balls in 157 minutes. Thorne, who reached his 50 in 100 balls, hit seven fours.

Teenager Janeiro Tucker, with whom Thorne added 85 for the sixth wicket in taking the score from 61 to 146, chipped in with 37 valuable runs.

Spinner James Swan, in a rare appearance this season, claimed four for 35 from seven overs as Manders' team suffered another slump after Swan bowled Tucker.

They quickly went from 146 for five to 177 for nine when the overs ran out.

Shannon Warner was the most economical wicket-taker for his team, taking two for 26 from 10 overs. Terry Burgess, who claimed the wicket of his Hamilton Parish captain, Ricky Hill, for 17, finished with one for 38 while Maybury took one for 32, both from 10 overs.

Spinner Dwayne Leverock, aiming to return to the Somerset team after being dropped last year, gave up just 21 runs in his 10 overs.

Despite an opening stand of 54 between Jermaine Warner (34) and Donovan Livingston (15), Maybury's XI still finished short of their target as they lost their last four wickets for 18 runs. Two of those were run-outs as they tried to increase their scoring rate.

Jeff Richardson, for so long trying to make the St. George's team, hit 32 while batting at number five and Leverock shared the top score of 37.

Anthony Amory led the Manders XI bowling with three for 27 while Ricky Hill took two for 17, both from seven overs. Tucker conceded just 21 runs in his 10 overs.

Bailey's Bay 199-8 St. George's 200-5 Clay Smith produced his highest score of the season -- 72 -- before retiring as St. George's regained the Cal Wade Memorial Trophy with a five-wicket win over Bailey's Bay at Wellington Oval on Saturday.

Smith shared in a second-wicket stand of 69 with opener Dennis Archer (43) after Eugene Foggo was dismissed by Anthony Braithwaite for a duck when the score was 12.

Archer and Smith moved the score on to 81 before Archer was dismissed and Bay had further success in the next over when Charlie Marshall dismissed Kenny Phillips for a duck to make it 83 for three.

By the time the next wicket was taken, at 184, St. George's had almost completed victory as Smith and Arnold Manders (47) added 101 for the fourth wicket. Their stand contained some good running between the wicket as victory was achieved in 42.2 overs.

Braithwaite, who made his debut for St. George's in Cup match last year, was the most successful bowler for Bay with two for 37 from his allotted 10 overs while Glenn Smith claimed one for 25 and Charlie Marshall one for 17.

Earlier, Bay were led by Cal Dill's 42 while number three and four batsmen Marshall and Smith both scored 32 and opener Braithwaite 22. Others in double figures for Bay were Jermaine Outerbridge with 14, captain Chris Smith 13 and Kerry Tucker 13 not out.

Off-spinner Arnold Manders was the top bowler for St. George's with three for 41 from 10 overs while Eugene Foggo, David Adams, captain Clevie Wade and Archer all took one wicket. Adams was the most economical of the bowlers, giving up 27 runs in his 10 overs of leg-spin.
