Thugs banned for life
One of the weapon-wielding youths who took part in the violent outbreak at a Wellington Oval football match has been banished from the game forever.
At their monthly meeting on Thursday night, the Bermuda Football Association?s (BFA) executive committee decided to impose immediate life bans on Ki-Roy Butterfield as well as Johnstephen Glasgow ? both registered players for Paget Community Football Club.
Last Tuesday reported that Butterfield ? who was pictured on the front of the newspaper in April carrying a knife during the ugly scenes that forced the Friendship Trophy final?s abandonment ? was back on the field of play without having faced any sanctions.
When asked how such an individual had been allowed to return to the game, BFA president Larry Mussenden had said that since Butterfield was cleared of all charges in the law courts ?that?s the end of the matter...whether the BFA and the public like it or not?.
However, the BFA top brass obviously had second thoughts as this latest development indicates.
A Press release circulated late yesterday evening by BFA general secretary David Sabir stated: ?The Executive Committee does not condone such behaviour and views this as a very serious matter.
?In making this decision, the association is very mindful of its duty to protect the game from abuse and as such will continue to encourage everyone to participate in football in the spirit in which it is intended. We are hopeful that we will never see a repeat of such an incident and encourage everyone to be true fans of football.?
It also underlined that the suspensions ?include but (are) not limited to playing football, refereeing and coaching in any activities organised under the auspices of the BFA?.
Regarding Glasgow, Sabir said the former?s case is still before the court but the BFA were satisfied they had sufficient evidence of his involvement in the horrific incident to oust him from the sport for life also.
