Base committee to meet for first time
be used meets for the first time today.
Management and Technology Minister the Hon. Grant Gibbons yesterday named the members of the Base utilisation committee that he will chair.
He said he hoped the committee could help Government find "a third or fourth leg for the Bermuda economy''.
Members include Mr. Michael Collier of the Bank of Butterfield, architect Mr.
John Gardner, Progressive Labour Party nominee Mr. Travis Gilbert, retired Finance Permanent Secretary Dr. Walwyn Hughes, Bermuda International Business Association executive officer Ms Wendy Davis Johnson, Bermuda Biological Station director Dr. Tony Knap, St. David's resident and businessman Mr. Gary Lamb, King Edward VII Memorial Hospital executive director Mrs. Sheila Manderson, National Trust director Ms Amanda Outerbridge, St. David's businessman Mr. Romeo Pitcher, financial adviser Mr. E.T.(Bob) Richards, Telco assistant general manager Mr. Eugene Saunders, and Four Star Pizza president Mr. Marico Thomas.
"In essence, we wanted to bring together a diverse group of Bermudians with lots of different experience and abilities,'' Dr. Gibbons said. "We hope they will look at it as Bermudians really looking out for the best interests of the Island and Bermudians in general.'' The committee will help identify and evaluate opportunities not only for the US Naval Air Station which closes in September of 1995, but the US Naval Annex in Southampton, the former Canadian Base at Daniel's Head, and HMS Malabar, also set to close next year.
The committee may hold public meetings as well, Dr. Gibbons said.
"One of the first things that we need to do is develop a method of going forward and working out a master plan for development of these areas -- looking at social, economic, and other strategic implications.'' Having such a plan would help the committee in assessing business proposals.
The committee would be assisted by staff from Planning and Finance, he said.
A university, health care facilities, and a private jet operation are among ideas that have been mentioned for the St. David's base, while a golf course is frequently mentioned as a possible use for the Naval Annex.
