Famed Canadian tap dancer comes to Bermuda for Kidfest
If you've ever harboured a secret desire to out-dance Fred Astaire, now is your chance to tap the light fantastic. Or if you prefer to just watch this unique brand of dance, one of Canada's top teams will perform here this weekend.
Famed Canadian tap dancer William Orlowski, whose group is appearing in the latest Kidfest production, is also offering classes and workshops through the National Dance Theatre of Bermuda.
Co-founder of the National Tap Dance Company of Canada, Mr. Orlowski's group will perform "Jennifer's Dream,'' a narrative dance work that will certainly appeal to adults just as much as children. It's set in rural Canada and is based on the story of a young girl who has learned to love dancing through her grandfather. When he dies, she loses all incentive. Then she dreams that her grandfather says, "As long as you dance, you will keep me alive.'' Says Kidfest producer Mrs. Paula Maguire, "The theme behind this is really that you hold on to and cherish a legacy, and I thought this is a pretty universal theme and that it would appeal to older people as well. I think it's a nice way of reminding ourselves that older people have so much to offer -- and we sometimes forget that! The way you keep someone alive in your heart is by their legacy and the memories they have left you.'' Mrs. Maguire adds that "Jennifer's Dream'' is full of action and very colourful: "It's Canadian rural, so you have the dancers playing spoons and dancing with hockey sticks. The children will really love it -- and so will adults! They are marvellous dancers.'' She should know. William Orlowski used to teach her tap and she later worked with him in TV's The Elephant Show.
The award-winning Orlowski is also a well known choreographer who created over 30 works for the National Tap Dance Company of Canada. He was assistant choreographer for Paramount's "Stepping Out'' starring Liza Minnelli and he created special choreography for Ginger Rogers in "The Palace Presents.'' He has performed throughout North America as featured guest artist with symphony orchestras, including his popular "A Tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.'' Television credits include guest appearances and choreography for CBS's award-winning documentary, "Dance Makes Waves,'' the Canadian Brass Video and "All That Bach'' which was nominated for an Emmy Award. Besides touring the US and Canada, he has performed in China, Hong Kong and the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Recently he was the choreographer for Canada's famed Shaw Festival production of "Lady Be Good,'' also appearing in the role of Jeff.
Tomorrow, The Orlowski Tap Dance Company will be giving a special show at the Extended Care Unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.
The tap dance workshops, in arrangement with the National Dance Theatre of Bermuda, will take place at the Hamilton studios of the Somerset School of Ballet. Senior classes will be held tomorrow and Friday from 7 to 8.30 p.m.
