Kyme looks to extend record

Stephen Smith: One of the players hoping to dethrone top seed Nick Kyme.

Former pro Nick Kyme will be aiming for an unprecedented 14th title when the BCS IBM Club Championships gets underway next week.Kyme is among three of the four defending divisional champions who will be putting their titles on the line. He’ll be facing some stiff competition in the form of second seed Tommy Sherratt who pushed him hard in last week’s Bermuda Squash Challenge as well as Chase Toogood, Stephen Smith, Mel Caines, Chris Dawson and Bermuda’s junior number one D’Vario Thompson.Last year’s finalist and now full time touring professional Micah Franklin can’t take part due to his pro world tour schedule.Laura Robinson, who broke through with her first Ladies Championships title in 2011, is back to try and keep hold of the trophy. She is seeded to meet Isabel Munro in the semi-finals and then second seed Denise Kyme in the final.Veteran Kyme is also a hot favourite for the Ladies Veterans title. If she were to win the double it would give her an eighth Ladies Championship title starting back in 1980.The Men’s Veterans Championship features one of the toughest draws in years. Number one seed is defending champion Jan Brewer who will have to face John Stout in the semi-finals before a possible final clash against younger brother Murray. But Murray will have his work cut out as he attempts to get through a tough bottom half of the draw featuring Andy McComb, Phil Barnes and Tony Muldoon. The BCS IBM Club Championships are now in their 49th year and this year features 60 players, the youngest being just 10 and others over 60.BCS IBM General Manager, Aaron Smith said: “We are proud to continue our sponsorship of this prestigious event. The tournament is always great fun and it’s fantastic to see all the young players from over the years now competing at the highest level.”All matches will be played at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association courts on Middle Road in Devonshire.First matches are scheduled for Monday with the finals to be played on Saturday, December 1, starting at 5pm.
