Swim trio ready for Worlds challenge

Bermuda swimmers Julian Fletcher, Roy-Allan Burch and Kiera Aitken will be representing the Island at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China.The Championships, which end on July 31, features athletes from more than 70 nations competing in five aquatics disciplines: swimming, water polo, diving, open water, and synchronized swimming.“Bermuda will have three of their best athletes competing in Shanghai over an eight day Championships that has gathered the best swimmers from around the globe. This meet will be the showcase for swimming as everyone begins preparation for the London games,” said National coach Ben Smith.“Our three swimmers have been a part of this process and are looking forward to the test.“We arrived on the 15th of July to make sure that the athletes were accustomed to the time change, food changes and were physically prepared after the long travel. They have looked very strong in the practices and are focused on swimming best performances.”Fletcher will be competing in the 100m breaststroke tomorrow and in the 50m breaststroke on Tuesday.Burch will be competing in the 100m freestyle on July 27 and the 50m freestyle on July 29.Aitken Bermuda’s most experienced swimmer at this level will be competing in the 100m backstroke on July 25, 50m backstroke July 27, 100m freestyle on July 28 and 50m freestyle on July 30.Meanwhile, senior swimmers Charlotte Faries, Philip Hagen and Erica Hawley achieved three personal bests at last weekend Dolphin Summer Meet at the BASA pool last weekend.The trio also set three BB times while Aaron Rego, Vaughn Rowse, Brittany Siddle, Jessie Thomas, Noah Marshall and Paige Bruton each had two personal bests.Junior coach Mimi Smith said: “Twenty of the Sharks Junior swimmers also participated in the meet and achieved great results with 50 percent of them swimming personal bests. Matthew Meszoly acquired two personal bests and finished the 100 individual medley with a great effort and Lorena Godwin achieved personal best times in each of her three events.“Freya Kermode, Aaliyah Simons, Joshua Thorne, Matthew Daly, and Lorena Godwin all swam a best time in one event; Jessica Bruton swam two B times while sister Holly Bruton swam one B time and one BB time.“Keagan Woolley continues to make significant progress and swam three B times while Isabelle Dutranoit showed her natural talent and added two B times and a BB time.”Trevor Cowan of Dolphins swim team said: “The best performing Dolphin swimmers were Mackenzy Cooper, Rebecca Cowan, Tate Crofts, Matthew Frick, Cathal Rynne, Skylar Trott and Kayah Wilks who set personal best times in all of their races. Mackenzie Cooper showed how much he’s improved this year, dropping a huge 25.01s seconds off his 100m individual medley time since last summer to take second place in the boys 13 and 14 age group.“Skylar Trott dropped a whopping 14.27s off her 50m breaststroke time to take a first place finish in the girls 8 and under age group.”
