Coach Best welcomes Boulevard players
Coaching and joined the under-20 national soccer squad for training on Saturday at Warwick Academy.
Clyde Best had last week asked Boulevard to send the players after club president Lou Matthews publicly criticised the original squad selection for excluding Boulevard players.
"If they feel they have players good enough to represent Bermuda both on and off the field of play then I want them to please send them out,'' said Best in response to the letter written by Matthews and published in The Royal Gazette .
And that's exactly what Matthews did.
The six carrying the Boulevard banner on Saturday were: Aaron Williams, Shakai Crockwell, Kareem Grant, Robert Wilson, Mel Gibbons and Desta Samuels.
"I'm glad they came. But we are not going to be able to assess them right away. They need to be around for a while and we will go from there,'' said Best. "(But) at least by accepting them, nobody can say that we didn't give them a chance.
"Actually, we would like to give all of the players a good shot. So the offer still applies to all coaches, even though all have been previously made aware of the invitation ... Our position will not change: If a coach feels that he has players good enough to represent Bermuda then send them over.'' Matthews said he discussed his concerns with Best and was happy with the dialogue between the two.
"Yes, I am pleased with (Best's) response and hope to continue a dialogue with him. We have come up with six positive young players and any reference to their lifestyles will be totally disproved,'' said Matthews.
"I should not have to justify getting players, though. In fact, some of the players at our club are discouraged from being overlooked in the past.'' "The onus shouldn't be placed on clubs like ours to single out players, not when our team is consistently finishing high in the league. The established clubs have their players picked, so they are getting looked at while we aren't. I think a fair process should have the coach looking at all of the clubs.'' Best, who also coaches the senior national side, said he was unable to go around to see all teams play.
The under-20 squad is training for the CONCACAF World Cup preliminary round scheduled for the Cayman Islands next month.
