Veteran Duzevic races Derby for friend in need

Kite-surfing victim Jeff Johnston will receive more than just a monetary donation from neighbour Antun Duzevic in the weeks to come after the veteran athlete revealed he woud run the May 24th Derby in honour of his friend.Johnston was seriously injured in an accident last August when he sustained severe head injuries as well as broken ribs and limbs. He was airlifted off the Island and has been undergoing physical, occupational and speech therapy at Spaulding Rehabilitation Clinic in Boston since September.Johnston, who worked in the IT department at Hiscox Insurance Company (Bermuda) Ltd, was due to get married four weeks after the accident to Bermudian Stephanie Outerbridge.Since then he has had to relearn skills, like breathing, swallowing and talking, from scratch, something that Duzevic knows is costing thousands of dollars. Not to leave a friend in need, the age group winner of several races both here, including the May 24 Derby, and around the world, he will run the race in hopes to raise money for Johnston.“He was my neighbour for several years and he was very kind, sincere and was always there to help people,” said 68-year-old Duzevic. “I will have a picture of him on my back and the shirt will be specially designed.“I’m wearing a shirt that says ‘Accidents can happen to anyone of us. Run for Jeff’ and have his picture on the back.“He was about to get married and suffered the tragic injury and I know if it was one of us in the community he would jump up and try to help in any way he could.“I have been in contact with various people who are close to him to see how he is doing and so forth.“His fiancé is still with him and although he has made tremendous progress, he still has a long way to go if he wants to get better.“Certain parts of him are ok but there are still things that need to be done and rehabilitation is slow but steady.”A dinner to raise funds has already taken place to help with his recovery from the accident but money is still needed.Admitting that he is carrying a slight leg injury, Duzevic said he was ready to run for a friend in a time of a need, noting that accidents do happen in life and can’t be undone.“The rehab costs a lot of money and regardless of who you are, this is something that is expensive and needs to be helped with if possible, so I’m going out there to run for a friend and hopefully help raise money for his rehab and recovery.“I have a certain injury but this won’t stop me from going on and at least competing next week.“Yes, there will be hundreds of runners out there but I want to let people know that I am out there and if they can give a small amount, it is priceless.“I have been in something like this, someone hit me from behind while I was running after they lost control of their bike, so these things happen.”Donations, no matter how small, can be made at www.jmjtrust.org.
