Lightbourne to the rescue
In typical Kyle Lightbourne fashion, the towering forward rose in the middle two minutes from full-time to firmly head home a Paul Scope cross and earn a Bermuda Football Association President's XI a hard-fought 2-2 draw against the Vice-President's XI in yesterday's curtain-raiser at the National Sports Centre.
Both teams, comprised of several of the Island's former greats, provided those gathered with a blast from the past, not to mention some delightful and attractive play which belied their ageing legs.
The President's XI ? led by BFA president Larry Mussenden ? took the lead through a superb Allen Fray diving header after only 57 seconds.
But that spectacular effort was erased by an equally brilliant solo run by Coolridge (Bumla) Bell who sped from midfield, twisted his marker like a pretzel on the edge of the 18-yard box and then slammed the ball past former Somerset Trojan team-mate Gladstone (Old Hell) Robinson from an acute angle.
Former Southampton Rangers maestro Edgar (Dillie Dick) Smith then caught former Social Club Bluebird Harold Madeiros napping in goal and deceived him with a delicate chip from all of 25 yards after a receiving a dish off from Stevie Tucker in the middle.
This then set the stage for Lightbourne, equal to the task, to power in his header and ensure both teams a deserved share of the spoils.
"It was very good and I really enjoyed it today," said the former PHC Zebras striker, now 35, who ended his playing days with English Third Division side Macclesfield prior to the current season.
"I was able to play with a lot of the old guys who I used to watch from the old bank at the National Stadium.
"A few of them still showed their skills and fitness level and I quite enjoyed it."
Lightbourne said he felt fine, despite being inactive for the past several months.
"There was some rust there but I enjoyed it. I know I can still play, and should be still playing. But it's time to move on into another area now."
The former pro is nearing completion of the UEFA B licence course in the UK.
He added: "I was supposed to come on for the other team, but they didn't want to bring me on and so I went back over to the other team.
"I told (coach Earl) Hart I wanted a goal today and I went back on and got the equaliser."
