Lightbourne unveils new-look squad in search for first win

Kyle Lightbourne will have his sights set on a first victory at the helm of the senior national football team on home soil next month when the squad show up for practice today at BAA Field.

The national team have gone winless since defeating Cayman Islands during the 2004 Digicel Cup competition in St.Vincent.

Lightbourne?s men suffered a crushing 7-0 hammering at the expense of visiting Manchester City Youth Academy at the National Sports Centre (NSC) in their previous outing last June.

But with the squad undergoing a major overhaul, Lightbourne has cast his net wider in search of the right combinations, Somerset Trojans? forward Aaron Williams and sweeper Sean Simmons and Ireland Rangers? Shakir Smith heading the latest list of players to benefit from the coach?s open door policy.

?It?s important we keep introducing new players to the programme at all times. Therefore we have again chosen a few new faces and hopefully they will gain some experience from these matches,? Lightbourne told .

?I have confidence in these players and hopefully we can go out there and give a good account of ourselves. And these games will be tough.?

Lightbourne admitted he?s eager to get a first win on home soil.

?Without a doubt I am still hungry for that first win and realistically you always look to win every match you play. And I think we will have an advantage playing at home to a certain degree with the pitch at the stadium (NSC) being so fast,? he added.

?But it?s just a matter of getting the players in the right frame of mind and hopefully go out there and get the job done.?

Lightbourne refused to comment on when the final team would be selected and who would eventually wear the captain?s armband during upcoming matches.

Two players tipped to lead the team are Kentoine Jennings and Meshach Wade, both having earned recalls to the national programme.

Wade captained a local select that defeated Jamaica?s Under-23 national squad in 2002 at the NSC.

Meanwhile, other newcomers to the squad include North Village ?keeper Zane Hendrickson, Kofi Dill, Keishen Bean, Keith Jennings, Vernon Tankard, Dandy Town?s Michael Parsons, Seion Darrell, Cymande Davis and Dennis Zuill along with Devonshire Colts? Antonio Lowe.

Town?s Jared Peniston, Ottis Steede, Maurice Lowe and Robert Wilson and PHC?s Stanton Lewis, Tokia Russell, Blenn Bean, Antwon Russell, Jahnai Raynor, Chris Furbert and Corey Dowling have all been recalled to national team duty.

Although Devonshire Cougars? Domico Coddington, Aljame Zuill, Joshua Butterfield, Ricky Brangman jr and Kwame Steede have been invited to train with the squad, it remains unclear whether they will actually participate or instead boycott next month?s friendly matches in protest of team-mate Raymond Beach?s three-year ban (see story above).

Revs striker Khano Smith tops the list of overseas players Lightbourne hopes to have at his disposal for the upcoming matches, the others being Damon Ming, Kevin Richards, John Barry Nusum.

Also included are Tyrell Burgess, Taurean Manders, Cecoy Robinson, Robert Richardson, Jahnai Raynor, Thomas Watson, Jason Williams, DeVaughn DeGraff, Logan Alexander, Nigel Burgess and Brendon Minors.

Bermuda are scheduled to take on New England on February 18 and Jamaica?s Under-23s on February 28 at the NSC.

Southend United striker Shaun Goater and US Indoor player David Bascome are not included in Lightbourne?s immediate plans.
