Bailey warns challengers: `We're gunning for victory'
Somerset Cricket Club's chairman of selectors Anthony Bailey has issued a stern warning to St.George's.
Speaking ahead of Saturday's final trial match, the chairman made it clear the champions would be gunning for a victory to "cap off" the 100th anniversary of both the mid-summer classic and the club itself.
"The actual spirit has picked up. The guys are now in the Cup Match mood and eagerly awaiting the final trial match with expectations of being selected," said Bailey yesterday.
"We are looking for a result to cap off our festivities. We have the 100th anniversary of the Cup Match itself and also of the club.
"There have been a number of events taking place and we want to make sure Cup Match kicks it all off on that particular evening.
"So we are definitely looking for a victory and not a draw and whichever eleven we select will be the best eleven based on a consistent basis, meaning those who have played consistently throughout the season and not just on the actual day of the final trial."
Bailey added that "special care" was being administered to what he termed as a typical Cup Match wicket.
"We will have a Cup Match special wicket, that's for sure," he said.
"We are going to have one that's evenly balanced but perhaps tipped more towards the batsmen.
"And as far as other preparations are concerned, the club has improved the facilities.
"Both the field and wicket have been upgraded a bit. We had a dry spell, so we've been watering it a bit."
Bailey encouraged both Somerset and St.George's supporters to come out and witness Saturday's final trial match which gets underway at 10 a.m.
"It's really a buzz up here (Somerset). So we encourage all Somerset and St.George's supporters to come out, so they can also have a peep of what they are going to be up against. They should come up and witness our final trial match and also become a part of the festive atmosphere that is developing here."
Somerset skipper Albert Steede will lead the president's eleven while Dexter Basden heads the vice -president's team.
The teams are as follows:
President's XI: A.Steede (Capt.), S.Ming, D.Wade, R.Jones, J.Tucker, D.Ferreira, I.Romaine, D.Leverock, D.Pilgrim, S.Hollis, C.Hill Res: K.Bashir.
