Man dropped cannabis as he ran from police officers
A Pembroke man who ran from police because of an expired bike licence got into deeper trouble after officers discovered he had cannabis.Stephen Knight, 23, claimed he forgot he had the drug on him, when he later appeared in Magistrates’ Court.“I ran because of the bike,” he said. “I forgot I had the weed on me. That was my weed for the week of Cup Match. I just like to smoke. That’s about it.”The 23-year-old was stopped by police on mobile patrol near Grotto Bay Resort on July 29.Crown counsel Susan Mulligan said officers were at the Blue Hole Gas Station in Hamilton Parish around 11.30am when they noticed Knight had an expired sticker on his licence plate. They followed him as he drove west on the sidewalk towards Grotto Bay. He appeared to be using his hand to conceal a plastic package in the waistband of his pants. The officers continued to follow Knight as he rode towards the resort’s main lobby, where he dropped the motorcycle and attempted to elude them on foot.During the brief foot chase, officers saw Knight drop plastic bags and two other packages from his pants.Knight was arrested and taken to the discarded items which included two plastic tubes and several small plastic bags, all containing plant material.Tests revealed that the packages contained a total of 5.3g of cannabis.Police also seized $280 in mixed notes from Knight; more cash was seized in a subsequent search of his Mission Lane home.Knight pleaded guilty to possessing the cannabis and apologised to the court: “It really wasn’t meant to go that far.”Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $800 for the offence.
