Goater double leads Southend to derby win

Shaun Goater proved once again he has a taste for derby goals, scoring twice as Southend romped past rivals Colcheter in the Battle of Essex yesterday.

Goater bagged his first strikes at Roots Hall, and the 251st and 252nd of his career, in helping the Shrimpers to a first home derby victory in 30 years.

It may not quite be Old Trafford, but Goater sent the 7,344 fans into rapture with strikes in the third and 77th minutes to snap a four-game winless streak and help his side to their first home win of the year.

The former Manchester City talisman, who famously scored twice against United in the last ever derby game at Maine Road, chased down a long ball from Luke Guttridge, shook off a challenge from Liam Chilvers before unleashing a fierce drive from 12 yards into the roof of the net.

Colchester drew level after 19 minutes through Sam Stockley but the Shrimpers took the lead again before the break through Mitchell Cole.

Goater, starting his third straight game for his new club, then latched onto another long ball, this time from Mark Bentley, and slid the ball past the advancing Dean Gerken to seal the win.

Goater is increasingly playing a pivotal role for the newly-promoted League One club with young striker Freddy Eastwood halfway through a four-game suspension and fellow forward Wayne Gray limping off with a hamstring injury during yesterday?s Bank Holiday Monday clash.

?I might have to get my boots on pretty soon,? joked boss Steve Tilson after the game, before revealing he may try and sign another player before the transfer window closes tomorrow.

The Shrimpers entertain Oldham this Sunday.
