Coach Todd blasts Colts fans

St George’s coach Richard Todd lambasted his team’s supporters following yesterday’s stalemate at Wellington Oval. The East Enders have not enjoyed the best of starts to the campaign and Todd believes that his team’s fans are partly to blame.“There’s a lot of negativity that our players have to overcome and it’s a constant around this club,” he said.“We saw a classic example of that last week when we didn’t even back one of our own (Clay Smith) who was in an election (Bermuda Cricket Board presidential election) and we nominated him.“It’s a lot of fair weather fans and a lot of people who stay close to the players and when things are not going well instead of getting behind the team they tend to want to get on top of them and try to pick things apart. This makes things difficult for the players because they start to lose that belief and we are not as bad as people may think.“We have the same group of players that accomplished some good things last year working together. We just have to understand that when we win and are successful people will cheer for us but then some of those same people are waiting for you to slip up so they can give you the negative.”Angelo Cannonier’s 36th minute equaliser cancelled out Otis Minors’ 15 minute strike to snap St George’s’ two game losing skid stretching back to October 29.“It’s not a win but it breaks a bad run and when you go through those times, players start to doubt their confidence particularly at St George’s where they are surrounded by negativity,” Todd added.“I am still bothered by the nature of the goals we are giving away. But credit to team for battling to find the equaliser to get ourselves back in.”Warriors coach Kameron Fox took matters in stride after watching his team stretch their unbeaten streak to two matches.“At the end of the day it was a good outcome for both teams and we will take the point,” he said. “Both teams had their chances and in the end it was definitely a fair result.”St George’s took the match to the visitors from the outset but fell behind when Minors’ header inside the area from a set piece found the back of the net.The hosts should have been back on even terms when St David’s were caught short at the back during a quick raid. But Warriors were spared the blushes when Allan Douglas Jr mis-kicked the ball attempting to shoot when passing to an unmarked team-mate with a clear run at goal might have been the better option. However, there would be no denying St George’s minutes before the half as the visitors’ defence switched off long enough for Cannonier to stab Jordan Darrell’s cross past the stranded George O’Brien Jr.Neither team really threatened to score after the break and in the end a draw was probably no more than the two East End rivals deserved.St George’s: Z Hendrickson, J Darrell, J Bassett, J Simmons, C Durham, D Signor (capt), J Hayward, K Smith (S Pitcher), C Darrell (J Dickinson), A Cannonier (R Basden), A Douglas JrBooked: C DurhamGoals: A Cannonier, 36St David’s: G O’Brien Jr, A Cannonier, A Lugo, T Govia (D Paynter), D Butterfield, OJ Pitcher, K Bean, T Webb-Caisey (K Minors), O Minors, D Lambert (A Crockwell), F Crockwell (capt).Booked: T Webb-CaiseyGoals: O Minors, 15Referee: Leroy Wilson.Man of the match: D Butterfield (St David’s)
