Barnett given glowing job references, jury hears
A man accused of attempted murder was given glowing job references before the alleged crime, a jury heard.Noet Barnett, 25, is said by prosecutors to have opened fire on Jeremiah Dill on October 4 2010 in what was classed by detectives as a gang-related act of vengeance.Mr Barnett told police after his arrest that he is innocent, and spent the morning in question travelling to and from the Southampton Princess Hotel where he was interviewed for a position as a room service waiter.Yesterday, the jury heard a written statement from Angela Tuzo, director of recruitment at the hotel, who said Mr Barnett applied for jobs in February and May 2010.On the first occasion, he supplied a resume stating he had worked in construction and painting and also as a labourer for the charities Habitat for Humanity and the Coalition for the Protection of Children. In a letter to Mr Barnett’s potential employer Sheelagh Cooper, executive director of the Coalition, wrote that she had known Mr Barnett for almost 15 years and recommended him as an employee.“He is very much part of our family and has grown to be a very giving and caring young man,” Mrs Cooper said, explaining that he had worked for her personally as well as for the charity. In a subsequent letter of reference, Nicola Feldman, manager at the Coalition, described Mr Barnett as “a dedicated worker who always comes ready to work at whatever task we ask of him. He’s a caring and hard working young man”.When he was interviewed by police in January 2011 after his arrest over the shooting, Mr Barnett told officers he got a phone call on Friday October 1 2010 inviting him to be interviewed at the Southampton Princess between 10am and 10.30am on October 4.The shooting occurred around 10am on October 4, by which time Mr Barnett said he was already travelling by bus to his interview with someone named Barry.Prosecutor Carrington Mahoney called Anthony Steede, area systems manager at the hotel, to give evidence yesterday. Mr Steede explained he is responsible for the system that records all calls made from the hotel. The system does not record incoming calls.Listing calls from the phone extension of Barry Hume, executive chief steward at the hotel, Mr Steele said only one call was made between September 21 and October 4 2010 to the contact number Mr Barnett provided on his application. That call was made on the afternoon of September 24.According to Ms Tuzo’s statement, Mr Hume interviewed Mr Barnett “some time in the latter part of 2010” but Mr Barnett was unsuccessful in the application. In his opening speech to the jury last week, prosecutor Rory Field accused the defendant of telling detectives a series of lies to create a false alibi for the time of the shooting.Mr Barnett denies attempted murder, using a firearm to commit attempted murder and handling a firearm, and the case continues.
