College student fined $1,000
Court for traffic offences racked up $1,000 in fines from five warrants.
Robert Williams, 19, of 14 Derwent Lane, Devonshire, who had refused to show for court after receiving tickets for traffic offences, told the magistrate he was studying.
Senior Magistrate Will Francis asked Williams: "Why did you not show up here? You had your head down in the books so much you cannot come to court?'' Williams received fines of $180 for speeding at 59 kph on January 8 on Middle Road, Warwick, $180 for speeding at 57 kph on Middle Road on February 10.
Three other offences were committed on January 18 at Camp Hill, Warwick.
Williams was fined $250 for driving without a driver's licence, $350 for not having the proper insurance for the motorcycle he was riding, and $50 for not wearing a helmet.
He told Mr. Francis that someone at TCD told him he did not need a driver's licence for a motorcycle once he had one for a private car.
Mr. Francis told Williams to go to TCD and do the test for motorcycles.
The Senior Magistrate then gave Williams up to the end of the year to pay the fines.
