Impaired boater fined

A Warwick man who admitted driving a boat while drunk was fined $800 in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

David Eatherley, 25, was charged with piloting the boat while his ability was impaired by alcohol or drug when the boat was underway.

Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said officers were on patrol in a marked Police boat on Sunday at 6.30 p.m. in Hamilton Harbour.

A report of a drunk boat operator came in and Police located the boat near White's Island.

Two men were on board. One was Eatherley.

Mr. Mahoney said Eatherley appeared to be drunk. He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

Eatherley told the court: "I was out diving for some mussels and I had a couple beers and I was a little intoxicated. Alcohol's done a lot of bad things to me in my life. I want to try and sort out my life. I start an AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) programme on Monday."

The maximum fine for operating a boat while impaired is $1,000. Bermuda law does not require boaters to have a driver's licence.

Swearing costs $800

A Devonshire man who yelled obscenities at Police received an $800 fine yesterday.

Marshall Wolffe, 20, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to using offensive words in a public place.

The court heard that at 3.30 a.m. on April 24, officers were on patrol on Reid Street, near Cavendish Heights, when their attention was drawn to shouting at the entrance of Club Azione, on Spurling Hill.

Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney said the officers saw two black males involved in a fight and went to the club to speak to them. One of the men was Wolffe who said: "That f*****g guy hit me first. Do your f*****g job. Thank God you're not f*****g Bermudian."

The defendant was arrested and taken to the Hamilton Police Station.

In court, Wolffe said: "I was feeling nice and I apologise for the disturbance."
