Police hunt in Warwick after men flee scene of bike and car collision

Police officers search the Warwick area for a vehicle that was involved in a hit and run accident outside of Warwick Academy yesterday.

Two men on a motorcycle fled the scene of an accident yesterday morning after their bike and a car collided.

Police said the crash happened at about 9.20 a.m. on Middle Road in Warwick, near the junction with Morgan Road and close to Warwick Academy.

A Police spokesman said: "Details about the incident are unclear; however it appears that a car and a motorcycle collided. Two men were on the motorcycle at the time and it appears that the car may have struck the motorcycle more than once.

"The two men on the motorcycle fled the area on foot; at this time it is unclear what their injuries are, if any."

Police officers on bikes and in patrol cars were seen soon after apparently searching the Warwick area for those involved.

The spokesman said the incident was being investigated and asked witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information should call 295-0011.

There was no response to questions about whether the pair were later apprehended, what happened to the car and its occupants and details of the vehicles involved.

Police reported yesterday that there were 12 road accidents resulting in injury between November 23 and Monday (November 30), and 38 causing vehicle damage only.

There were four arrests for impaired driving and 20 vehicles taken without consent. Southampton had the most vehicle thefts — six. Warwick and Sandys had three each, while St. George's, Pembroke and Paget each had two. Hamilton Parish and Devonshire had one each and there were none in Smith's.

The Police spokesman said: "Most of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with one pedal cycle also reported stolen during the period. Of the 20 vehicles reported stolen, six were subsequently recovered."

He added: "The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the Island's roads.

"Additionally, we urge those travelling in cars to use their seat belts at all times and make sure any children travelling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those travelling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane."
