Mr. Wade was responding to an editorial in Wednesday's The Royal Gazette which attacked him for criticising Premier David Saul's planned trip to London to explore with Prime Minister John Major possible changes in Bermuda's relations with Britain.

"The PLP seems stuck on straight Independence, and its accompanying dangers, a proposition which a great number of its own followers helped to reject at the August 16 referendum,'' the editorial said.

But Mr. Wade noted that he told a Royal Gazette reporter twice last week that while he was not advocating such a move, he felt it was possible for Bermuda to have both Independence and a "metropolitan'' relationship with Britain.

Under such an arrangement, Bermudians would be free to live and work in Britain, but no reciprocal arrangement would exist, meaning that Britons would not be free to live and work in Bermuda.

Officers said Aitken's eyes were glassy and he smelled of alcohol.

Aitken had 168 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.

Aitken told Acting Magistrate the Wor. Kenneth Brown: "I drove only about 100 yards and I stopped the bike.'' He added that he did not see the Police but stopped because he realised he was not able to ride.

Staff members detained the men until Police arrived after they became suspicious when the note did not seem genuine.
