Gazette announces new venture
magazine market, the company announced yesterday.
Crown Communications, a new division of The Royal Gazette Ltd., will produce a range of publications and other projects designed to broaden the company's editorial coverage and appeal to advertisers.
The new division's first publication will be the third issue of The Bottom Line, the Gazette 's economic review, which is now to be published bi-annually. The next issue is due out on November 12.
Early next year, it will publish a new colour monthly, RG Magazine, to be printed by The Bermuda Press and distributed with the daily newspaper.
Based in The Royal Gazette 's offices on Par-la-Ville Road, Hamilton, Crown Communications will be headed by Managing Editor Mr. Chris Gibbons, former Sports Editor of the Mid-Ocean News. Mr. David L. White, Editor of The Royal Gazette, will be editor-in-chief.
Ms Dana Cooper has been appointed Art Director and Mrs. Robin Zuill Senior Writer. Mr. delMonte Davis will be Crown's Advertising and Marketing Co-ordinator.
English-born Mr. Gibbons, 35, joined The Royal Gazette in 1982 as a sports sub-editor and became sports editor of the Mid-Ocean News in 1985.
Ms Cooper, 31, who recently published her first book, My Bermuda ABC, has recently returned to the Island after working in the United States. She has worked as a designer on several publications, including Sports Illustrated and the Washington Post, and was art director for Foote, Cone and Belding, the New York advertising agency.
Bermudian Mrs. Zuill, 27, joined The Royal Gazette as a news reporter in 1987.
She joined the paper's business section as a reporter last year.
Fellow Bermudian Mr. Davis, 43, joined the company earlier this year as advertising sales representative for the Mid-Ocean News . He was previously senior sales executive with the St. George's Club.
Mr. Keith Jensen, general manager of The Royal Gazette , said: "We see Crown Communications as complementing our existing newspapers. The monthly publication will offer advertisers magazine-quality advertising and we anticipate it will be the largest guaranteed circulation of any magazine in Bermuda.'' Mr. White said: "This is an exciting new venture which will give people the kind of information they want today.
"Two trial editions of the Bottom Line business magazine have told us that Bermuda is ready for a serious and solid business publication with good colour. Because of excellent advertising support, we are able to offer a high quality business magazine to the public without charge.
"We will also be producing a monthly high gloss, full colour magazine, which will enjoy The Royal Gazette 's wide circulation to both locals and hotel and cruise ship visitors. Only The Royal Gazette can offer that circulation.
"I think the team at Crown Communications is tops. Chris Gibbons, the Managing Editor, has been in Bermuda a long time and knows what the market wants and how to produce for the market. delMonte Davis is there to make sure we meet the needs of our advertisers. Dana Cooper has wide design experience in Bermuda and abroad with such top publications at Sports Illustrated. Robin Zuill is a Bermudian who demonstrated her ability in The Royal Gazette's business department. They all go well together.
"We are excited about this project and, recession or no recession, we think it will be a great addition to Bermuda's publishing. We plan to add more publications in the future. This new unit has behind it the long experience and high editorial standards of The Royal Gazette Ltd.'' Mr. Gibbons said Crown Communications will enable The Royal Gazette Ltd. to make greater use of its editorial resources while opening up new avenues for increased business in the 1990s and beyond.
He said: "This project represents a major investment for the company and a great challenge for all of us at Crown Communications.
"I believe there is a market in Bermuda for a magazine that combines quality writing and photography. At present, local magazines cater to specialised or narrow interests. We think that with the Gazette's circulation base, we can offer a much broader appeal to readers and advertisers.
"I want RG Magazine and all of our publications to reflect what Bermuda is -- a unique multi-cultural society with wide-ranging tastes and interests.''
