Deported man faces decade-old crack dealing charge

A man who fled the Island ten years ago after being charged with dealing crack cocaine has been deported from the US and brought before Magistrates’ Court.Roger Wainwright, 53, originally of Southampton, was arrested on Thursday night after his flight arrived in Bermuda.According to Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Cindy Clarke, Mr Wainwright had initially been arrested on March 8, 2003.His charges, which were indictable only, were to have been heard by the Supreme Court.Mr Wainwright faced two counts of possession of crack cocaine with intent to supply, as well as cocaine hydrochloride with intent supply, and possession of a scale as drug equipment.He had been accused of possession 80g of crack and 30.41g of cocaine.Mr Wainwright also had an outstanding charge from November 2, 2001, in which he pleaded not guilty to possession of 0.13g of heroin in an increased penalty zone — near the Kids College in Pembroke.Yesterday, Mr Wainwright told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner he had been serving time in the US under a separate matter, adding: “I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”Asked why he hadn’t attended court on his earlier charges, he replied: “I got scared and ran.”Mr Wainwright apologised and requested bail, saying he had been addicted to drugs at the time but was now clean.He requested bail, adding: “I promise this time I will appear in court.”However, Mr Warner told him: “I can’t attach a lot of credence to that, based on your history.”Mr Warner refused bail, and remanded Mr Wainwright until his next court appearance on June 14.
