Sherratt's strength tell in epic battle

led the victory parade which saw Bermuda capture three individual titles at the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships on Saturday.

In addition to Sherratt, Nick Kyme and Tracey Harvey also entered the winners circle, while Carolyn Young had her hopes dashed at the final hurdle.

Competing in the Boys Under 16 Division, Sherratt and Bajan Yerodin Parris engaged in an epic one-and-a-half-hour battle with the former in the role of the aggressor and the latter the retriever. Parris ran down everything Sherratt threw at him for the first three games, but simply ran out of gas in the last two as Sherratt emerged victorious 9-3, 9-10, 8-10, 9-1, 9-0.

"It was probably the best match of the tournament,'' said Bermuda team coach Julian Rose. "The level of squash was amazing with the fitness level of the two really showing. And the superior level of fitness came through for Sherratt.'' In fact Sherratt went undefeated throughout the week-long tournament which had Bermuda place second in the team event. He sliced through the competition and was rewarded for his efforts by being placed atop the latest Junior Caribbean Individual Rankings with Parris second.

Kyme and Harvey likewise adopted similar positions in the Boys Under 12 and Girls Under 14 Divisions. Kyme was on fire all week, not dropping a single game. He easily downed Sam Taylor of Barbados in the final 9-0, 9-2, 9-4.

Meanwhile, Harvey, who failed to qualify for a team spot, showed her mettle in the individual section by disposing of former number one Carla Jackson (Barbados) and then, in an all-Bermuda final, tossing aside the challenge of Nicola Swain 5-9, 9-7, 9-1, 9-5.

Young came up against a buzzsaw in the form of the best female player in the region -- junior and senior -- Andrea Goodridge, and played well before going down 9-3, 9-3, 9-1.

Said spokesman Roger Sherratt: "This was a really outstanding tournament.

"We won three individual titles which was much better than expected as we had never won so much as one before. And we came second in the team event after earlier stating that we only hoped not to end up fourth.

"It definitely looks good for the future.'' Next up for the youngsters are the World Junior Championships in Honk Kong next month.
