Boyles: It is all about the performance

@$:BODY-FRANK:NO doubt Devarr Boyles is happy to win his first trophy as new Devonshire Cougars coach. But it isn't all about winning, he insisted.BODY-FRANK-2:Cougars romped to a comfortable 4-0 victory over North Village in the Martonmere Cup final on Tuesday to extend their unbeaten start to the season. But talk of doing this season what PHC did last season is not Boyles' main focus."I'm not too sure what PHC's focus was but our focus is not trophies, just on performances," said Boyles yesterday. "If we do the right things then the results are close behind. The performances are very good from where we stand." Cougars coped better than North Village on the wide open spaces of Wellington Oval. Training at the Oval on Sunday may have made a difference but Boyles says the switch was just for "a change of scenery". "We played there against Hamilton Parish and I like to put the players in difference environments, which is more of a commitment challenge to see who was committed to making another type of commitment," said the coach. The final was only 40 seconds old when a clash of heads between Village's Damon Edwards and Domico Coddington of Cougars sent both players to hospital and forced both teams to reorganise. "It affected both teams because people who were due to start were trusted to perform on behalf of the teams," said Boyles who made the adjustment and even found a fourth goal through substitute Lamont Brangman in the closing moments of the game to complete the romp. "We have had seven different goalscorers this season so it is spread around. The scorers on Tuesday, Kor-von, Tumani and Lamont, are all under the age of 20."Teams that manage to perform well even after losing key players are the one that generally have solid youth programmes. In Cougars' case they have hardly missed top strikers Heys Wolffe and Raymond Beach who returned to Dandy Town ¿ Boyles' former team ¿ as new players have come in and seized the opportunities. "We can manage the expectations. The teams that generally perform well are there or thereabouts in terms of results. We spend a lot of time on technical things in training. It is a big shift for the club and players. Most clubs are geared towards destinations but our shift is completely different. "In losing, if we feel that we performed then I'm happy with that. We're not worrying about the outcome, just the input. Whatever happens after that we can't control. The rest will take care of itself." l FIRST Division teams stand between six Commercial Division sides and a place in the second round of the FA Cup when first-round matches are held on Sunday. With the Premier Division teams not entering the competition until the next round, teams from the Commercial and First Divisions will be placing great importance on Sunday's matches, knowing that a meeting against a top team could be the reward. However, with no all-Commercial ties, that division could realistically be without a representative in the second round. Robin Hood, who jointly lead the Commercial Division with BAA Wanderers, face one of the toughest ties of the day when they take on promotion-chasing St. David's at BAA Field. Hood, who have veteran striker Des Minors back in their ranks, squeezed out a close 2-1 win over another Commercial side St. George's All-Stars last weekend. However, a fitter and more in-form St. David's side represents a sterner test for them at BAA Field this Sunday as the FA Cup again takes centre stage. Wanderers could be one of the teams pulling off an upset when they take on X-Roads in the second match at BAA Field. X-Roads have failed to match last season's performances and languish at the bottom of the tables. Other Commercial sides looking to pull off upsets are MR Onions, third in the standings, who are away to struggling Wolves, while Lobster Pot meet Prospect at Police in another match that has upset potential.Tuffs Dogs take on high-riding St. George's Colts who are on a five-game winning streak, while Valley, fresh off a 10-1 hammering of Pest Control, are hoping to give former cup winners Somerset Trojans a scare or two at Malabar. The pick of the matches should be the all-First Division clash between Social Club and Ireland Rangers at Bernard Park while Paget meet promotion contenders Somerset Eagles at White Hill in the other all-First Division tie.
