Ref in red card rumpus: Colts boss calls for ban on Crockwell as four sent off

Devonshire Colts 2 Devonshire Cougars 2 Eight-man Colts clung on in this controversial derby which had everything bar the Second Coming.

Manager David Furbert called for referee Stuart Crockwell to be banned from officiating in Colts matches after three of his players were sent off in 15 minutes.

But the Cup holders managed to make it to to extra-time which began spectacularly with captain Shannon Burgess scoring with a delightful strike from the centre circle from the kick-off after spotting keeper Ricardo Brangman off his line.

Colts' remaining players went wild and must have still been celebrating when, moments later, Jeremy DeShields rifled in a 30-yard screamer from the narrowest of angles to ensure a replay. Cougars also lost Jeremy Salaam after he was sent off for a second bookable offence in extra-time.

Colts began the game with more than a touch of complacency and seemed to be content to sit on their one-goal advantage courtesy of a near post strike by Aljame Zuill when referee Crockwell got busy with his notebook.

Substitute Marvin Belboda left the field in the 70th minute just 13 minutes after coming on after he reacted, claiming he had been punched by Cougars' Trevor Smith.

Five minutes later McKinnon Hollis got his marching orders after the referee judged him guilty of deliberate handball in the box.

Cougars captain Shawn Smith netted from the penalty spot and his side won a further advantage when Aljame Zuill was sent off for a rash challenge on a defender moments after the ref had pulled him up for clattering into the keeper.

Colts boss Furbert was seen remonstrating with the referee after the end of normal time and after the match he accused Crockwell of having a vendetta against his club. Referring to the handball, Furbert said: "Our player took a swing at the ball and sliced it and it shot up and hit his arm. For the good of the game that shouldn't be a penalty -- I will be reporting him to the BFA.

He said: "We have had problems with Crockwell for the whole of the season. He reported two players but they both got off.

"I understand why Belboda went -- he was punched and then he retaliated. But Zuill made full contact with the ball and the law says if you make full contact with the ball and the physical contact comes after, it's not a foul.'' However Furbert was full of praise for Burgess after his stunning 55-yard chip. "That was intelligence -- a captain playing a captain's role. The keeper was unprepared but Shannon took it well.'' Burgess said: "I saw the chance -- it had to be a chip but I only just had enough energy to take it.'' Dandy Town 2 Fire Services 0 Fire Services may have done themselves proud by limiting Premier Division side Dandy Town to just two goals at St. John's Field, but there was never a question as to who would win this clash.

In fact, Town's coaching staff had every right to blast their players for not coming away with a more comprehensive win, especially since they underlined their supremacy from the outset by scoring the two goals within the first 12 minutes.

The opening two-goal outburst wasn't a sign of things to come as Town's attack fizzled and failed to come away with any further scoring success in a game which they controlled.

Heys Wolffe put Town ahead after just 90 seconds when he scored from close range and youngster Raymond Beach put them two goals up after 12 minutes, slamming the ball home from 15 yards.

But to their credit Fire didn't fold, continuing to fight for the rest of the first half.

They came close after 19 minutes when Town goalkeeper Antoine Lightbourne advanced to block Theron Smith who slipped through the middle on a breakaway and then Carlos Caisey headed a corner by defender Bo Saggar inches over the bar.

At the other end Town skipper Darron Simons, Wolffe and Beach all put efforts wide.

The trend continued in the second half with Town the sharper but accomplishing little up front.
