Town shooting for top three
Dandy Town coach Mark Trott is aiming for a top-three finish for his resurgent side after a crushing victory over the Premier Division's basement club St.
David's on Saturday night.
Town dominated an entertaining match punctuated by some spectacular goals at St. John's Field and stormed into a 3-0 lead inside half an hour.
By that time, it was clear there would be no repeat of the draw between the teams earlier in the season, which gave the Islanders their sole league point of the campaign so far.
Striker Darron Simons netted twice, either side of a fine strike by Raymond Beach and even though Lionel Cann pulled one back for the visitors in first-half stoppage time, Town rounded off a good night's work with further goals by Heys Wolffe and Lionel Furbert in the second period.
Survival in a tight division has been Trott's stated aim in recent weeks, but he conceded that now safety was in sight it was time to look towards the top of the table.
"We're taking nothing for granted but if we get one more point in our last three games, I think that should make us safe,'' said Trott.
"We'll be looking to finish strongly and if anyone slips up we'll be ready to step in. We'll be fighting for a top three position.'' Town went ahead after just four minutes. The St. David's defenders appeared to freeze as Lloyd Christopher curled over an inswinging free kick from the right which was allowed to bounce on its way to Simons, who dived to head home from six yards.
Town then virtually sealed victory with two goals in a minute.
The first came in the 27th minute from a pinball-like scramble following a Wolffe corner from the right. Beach saw his first effort cleared off the line, but when the ball returned to him via several flailing legs, the youngster volleyed powerfully into the net.
Sixty seconds later, the ball was in the net again. With the St. David's defence in total confusion, Reggie Tucker charged into the penalty area and squared for Simons to tap in his second goal from close range.
St. David's created plenty of chances at the other end, but two glaring misses in rapid succession just after the half hour did not help their cause.
First Tewoldie Selassie skied his shot from eight yards after a great cross by Otis Minors and then Chae Simmons somehow prodded wide from inside the six-yard box.
But the Islanders stuck to their task and Cann opened their account on the stroke of half-time, leaping to meet Simmons' curling cross with a powerful header.
After the break, Christopher and Dean Bailey both went close with headers from corners, before the goal of the night gave Town a 4-1 lead in the 67th minute.
Tucker lobbed a clever ball over the St. David's defence, Wolffe ran onto it and without hesitation lashed the ball crisply into the top right-hand corner of the net.
Furbert completed the rout 15 minutes from time. Boyles made good ground down the right and crossed for Tucker, whose fierce shot rebounded off a defender to Furbert who coolly placed his shot into the bottom corner and followed it with a celebratory cartwheel.
