Island restaurants launch fundraiser for hospitality workers killed in attacks

Bermudians are being urged to go out to their favourite restaurant on October 11 to raise funds for the families of hospitality workers killed in the World Trade Center attacks in New York.

Restaurants around the world will be donating ten percent of their takings on October 11 to the fund to help the families of the 78 staff at the Windows on the World restaurant at the top of the World Trade Center and several hundred other catering workers in the building who were killed.

Chamber of Commerce night clubs and restaurants division chairman Jay Correia said he hoped at least 30 restaurants in Bermuda will take part in the event, which will be called "Windows of Hope".

"The hope is that all Bermudians will go to their favourite restaurant on October 11," he said. "The restaurants are preparing to take as many people as they can.

"You should choose the restaurant you like best and know that as well as having a good meal, ten percent will go towards a good cause.

"The hospitality workers were probably the least well-off of those in the World Trade Center and their families are probably most in need of help.

"A lot of people in Bermuda have been grappling about how best they can help out, and this seems a most appropriate way given that so many people work in hospitality in Bermuda."

Advertisements are expected to appear shortly listing all the restaurants taking part in the event.
