'We can turn them into young ladies'

Young girls are in for a treat this Sunday when the Phenomenal Women's Association present 'A Tea Party Fit For a Princess'.

The event is the first for the group and will take place at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess' Gazebo Lounge. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., girls aged six to 12 years old will be treated like princesses with face painting, magicians, etiquette lessons, manicures and tons of give-aways.

Tickets are $15 for children and $30 for adults and can be bought at Hott 107.5's studios. Penny Ingram, public relations Officer for the group, said the idea of the tea is to let the girls know they are indeed princesses.

"Tea came about because we thought about princesses and in order to get to them, we have to get to them when they are young. We can turn them into young ladies."

She said the proceeds from the tea will go to the elderly. "When we were younger, granny gave us tea. We want give back to granny." She said the event is a bonding time for mothers and daughter. Each girl must be escorted by her royal guardian. It can be a mother, grandmother, godmother or anyone that child sees as a role model. The purpose of the party is to make the young girls graceful. They will learn how to curtsey, how to eat at a table and to gain respect.

Ms Ingram said: "Young women today don't demand respect from men. We don't know we are worth it. Women need to be uplifted. They need to know their self-worth and it has to start from within."

She also explained the group is trying to get a mixed group of little girls. "We want a cross section of people, not just black, we want everybody. All little girls are princesses, it doesn't matter what colour they are", she said.

Phenomenal Women's Association has been together for a year. The group was created by Kristy Burgess, also known as Miss Thang at her birthday party last May. This year, the group registered as an organisation and a charity. Their aim is to become the premiere young charitable organisation while exemplifying etiquette, grace and social excellence.

In addition to the tea party, the group also has a phenomenal women's oil and body spray made by Ihasans. Ms Ingram explained when people purchase the oil or spray, they contribute to raising $20,000 for people who need extra money for medical expenses.
