Misery of a mystery injury
Well, today is D-Day or more like 'knee day' as the situation with my swollen right knee comes under scrutiny.
It's almost two weeks since it inexplicably flared up after our First Division success over Millwall.
Like I said before, I can't remember any real challenges or falls that caused any damage to my knee and would have triggered the sudden swelling.
Absolutely nothing was wrong with me when I came off the field.
Anyway, that's all in the past now and since then my knee has been playing a cat-and-mouse game with me with the swelling coming up and going down and then coming up again. All the while I have felt no pain whatsoever.
That's the really baffling thing about this experience. I've been able to work out ? sprinting, running, that sort of stuff ? without any pain.
Normally, when you have swelling it means there's something wrong and they can say 'this is the problem' or 'that's the problem' and 'this is what needs to be done'. The pain would indicate where the problem is and then it can be diagnosed.
But I'm not getting any pain!
So, in a sense, that's a negative because I have this swelling and no idea what's causing it. What I do know is that your knee doesn't just swell up without a reason.
Right now the swelling is at the same point it was originally, though it had gone down a bit earlier this week.
However, when I increased my training, it flared up once again.
The only noticeable hindrance is that when it puffs up it prevents me doing a full quadricep stretch ? as in pulling my leg backwards to touch my behind. At that point I do feel some discomfort.
So, today the physio and other team officials are going to assess the situation and determine my status for the weekend match against Watford.
A win against Watford would propel us right back up there. It's a big game because they are doing quite well and we've slipped to ninth place in the table.
We don't want to go any further down. We're at home and we have to win. A draw would be a disappointing result for us.
Yes, we have a few injuries but I'd like to think that with our fans behind us we can still come away victorious.
It's a crucial clash which I really would not want to miss but I have an uneasy feeling I won't be able to play tomorrow.
If it's decided that I can get through training then there's a possibility of me being in the squad but, at present, I just can't see that.
What's worse is this swelling could have far-reaching implications for the rest of my year. If nothing changes significantly by early next week I suspect I'll be seeing a specialist and who knows what the outcome of that will be.
In a worst-case scenario I could be out of action between four to six weeks ? depending on the severity of my knee problem.
The analysis so far is that the cartilage and ligaments are okay but I'm quite concerned about what's causing this build-up of fluid.
It's bitterly disappointing to be injured at such a vital stage of the season, leading into Christmas. Our schedule is hectic and we certainly want to come out on the other side of the New Year among the top six (clubs) in the league.
In the New Year, a gap usually starts to appear between the teams among the top six or seven and those around ninth and below. We don't want to be outside the lead pack because they are chasing the number one spot and that's where you want to be ? in the thick of things.
Personally, I have not been scoring at the ratio that I'm used to. Some of that's to do with my form and some to do with not playing on a regular basis.
My ratio has widened from one (goal) in two (games) to one in over three. I'm determined to rectify that but first I've got to get over this latest hurdle.
