St. George's bounce back

St. George's Colts proved again that they are a team to be reckoned with as they soundly defeated perennial giants PHC Zebras 2-0 at Wellington Oval.

Scoring for St. George's were Sinclair Gibbons and Gregg Foggo. St. George's continued their streak of not conceeding a goal on their home turf in league play this year. They also capitalised by scoring more than one goal in a game for the first time this season.

The cold and blustery conditions at the Oval benefitted neither team as both struggled to gain the advantage in the scoring column. Both teams were able to penetrate the other's defence with telling runs off the ball. However, both sides were equally ineffective creating scoring opportunities.

In the eighth minute of play, Foggo had his shot beautifully tipped over the crossbar by PHC keeper Ty Williams. St. George's came close again in the 36th minute when skipper Neil Paynter had his powerful header turned aside at the last moment for a corner. Short of these two scoring opportunities, there were few chances in the first half.

In the 40th minute, Gibbons broke the scoring gridlock when he was able to stab the ball home from one yard out.

The goal developed when Darrin Walker controlled a loose ball across the middle of the pitch and fed a pass to a cutting Carlos Greaves. Greaves pulled the trigger on his shot that appeared destined for goal when the onrushing Gibbons sneaked in from the backside of the defence to tap the ball in.

PHC, undaunted by the the momentary setback, continued to press forward their attack. However, they had neither the creativity nor the resolve to put the ball in the back of the net and, ultimately, became victims of their own inefficiency.

Ten minutes into the second half, PHC came dangerously close to evening up the score as a goalmouth scramble went begging with shots going off target and goalkeeper Troy Hall smothering the others.

PHC brought on Randy Boyles for Raynell Lightbourne in order to bolster their attack. The move did not pay any dividends as Boyles was soon after ejected from the game by referee Roddy Burchall for unsportsmanlike conduct.

St. George's capitalised on the one-man advantage when they managed to score six minutes later to ice the game.

Gibbons again contributed to the score when he was the beneficiary of a textbook play down the middle. Gibbons caught the defence backpedalling and, at the precise moment, pushed his pass wide to Foggo who was running hard on the play. Foggo controlled the pass and unleashed a shot that rocketed past the rapidly advancing Williams in the 87th minute, putting the game out of reach.
