Communications glitches have hit the Bermuda Weather Service’s ability to deliver radar images, its director said yesterday.

Mark Guishard said connection problems on its network had affected the updating of weather information, including Doppler weather radar imagery, on its website and commercial TV channels.

Mr Guishard added: “This is not a problem with the weather radar – it is an issue with the communications network that began on Monday night.

He added it was hoped to have the problems ironed out by yesterday.

Mr Guishard said: “This is not affecting weather forecasting or observations by Bermuda Weather Service, and the Bermuda Weather Service is communicating directly with aviation and marine interests providing updated weather information.

“The Bermuda Weather Service is also continuing to provide weather updates on its Facebook page.

“Once the network issue is resolved, all public communications channels should be updated shortly thereafter, to once again provide the public real-time data.

“The Bermuda Airport Authority and Bermuda Weather Service apologise to the public for this inconvenience, which we hope will be resolved quickly.”

Dr Guishard also gave an update on heavy rainfall caused by an active front that moved slowly over the area.

He said Bermuda experienced about 3.57 inches of rain in 24 hours on Monday – about half the record for a single day set on June 1, 1996 at 7.77 inches.

He said: “While this is not a record, it did result in some localised road flooding as well as going some way towards replenishing many water tanks.

“We still remain at a deficit compared to the normal rainfall climatology.

The 2020 year-to-date rainfall is 44.95 inches versus the normal year-to-date rainfall of 51.54 inches.”
