all their events at the Blunt Invitational Track and Field Meet at Duke University in Raleigh, North Carolina, on the weekend.

Year Six students Sonina Lottimore and Velvet Smith, both aged 10, competed in the 11-12 age group in both jumping and running events.

Lottimore was second in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, one-and-a-quarter inches and second in the high jump with a clearance of 4'2''. She was also amongst 32 competitors in the 100 and 200 metres, finishing 11th in both in times of 14.41 and 30.09 respectively.

Smith also had good finishes in the jumps, placing third in the high jump (3'10'') and sixth in the long jump (11'71 ''). Smith was also fifth in the 1,500 metres in 5:31.27 and ninth in the 800 metres in 2:41 out of 32 participants.

Medals were awarded for the first three finishers and ribbons for the fourth through sixth-place finishers.

Some 1,200 children took part in the meet, from Washington, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina and New York. There was also an eight-member team from the Bermuda Striders Club.

The US Naval Air Station will host a unique road race on Sunday night (7.45), a five-kilometre burst along the runway.

Many of the Island's leading runners are expected to tackle the course, which could produce a Bermuda record for the distance.

Regular race entry closed last Sunday but there is a late entry fee of $15 up until race time. T-shirts will be awarded to the first 100 registered runners and there will also be age group awards.
