Island teams head to US
Detroit today to compete in the US Open Team Championships which take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Lobo Hall sports complex.
Nick Frost, Mike Lindo and Dave Waltham make up the number one team while Myron Piper, Alden Ray and Owen Hunt, who will travel down from Canada, are members of the number two team.
Frank Ternier is the coach while Mansfield Smith will travel as manager.
Roughly 160 teams from the United States, Britain and Bermuda will participate in the annual tournament.
The BTTA annual Open Youth Table Tennis Championships, sponsored by Island Satellite Systems and John Barritt and Son, took place on Saturday at Elliott Primary School.
Total games won came into play to decide the boys' 15-19 age group after three players, Chris Dawson, Travis Smith and Noel Pearman all finished with 5-1 records. Dawson, by virtue of winning 11 games, was declared the winner with Smith and Pearman both having won 10.
Dawson seal his triumph by defeating Ben Dier Jr 19-21, 21-15, 21-17 in the last game of the round robin. Earlier Dawson defeated Smith 21-16, 21-16 while Smith stopped Pearman 21-17, 22-20. Pearman inflicted the only loss on Dawson 16-21, 21-16, 21-12.
Dier defeated Giles Spurling 20-22, 21-17, 21-15 in the finals of the cross-over to win the boys' 12-14 age group while Gavin Manders (3-0) won the boys' 9-11 title. James Lister (2-1) was the runner-up, beating Taurean Manders 21-19, 22-20 in the best match of the series.
Gabriella Salvia defeated Tanisha Manders 21-9, 21-11 to take the girls' 12-14 title. They were the only girls participating.
