The Progressive Labour Party has a marginal lead over the One Bermuda Alliance, according to a new poll commissioned by The Royal Gazette.

And Opposition Leader Marc Bean enjoys a ten point lead over Premier Craig Cannonier in the survey carried out by Mindmaps in mid-November.

Thirty-six percent of registered voters say they would vote PLP in a general election, compared to 35 percent for the OBA, with the rest refusing to back either of the two parties.

Mr Bean has a favourability rating of 48 percent, compared with 38 percent for Mr Cannonier.

Deputy Premier Michael Dunkley scores 42 percent, with PLP Deputy Leader Derrick Burgess on 28 percent.

Mr Cannonier’s rating is down from the 48 percent he scored in our last poll, taken shortly before the election in December 2012, while he was Opposition Leader.

However, his 38 percent is still the third highest score by a Premier in the 20 polls this newspaper has commissioned since the 2007 election, beaten only by Paula Cox’s scores of 62 percent and 42 percent in her first few months in the top job.

Mr Bean’s score of 48 percent is the joint highest for an Opposition Leader in that six-year period, level with Mr Cannonier’s rating in December 2012.

A breakdown of the results by race shows the OBA gleans 72 percent of the white vote, with the PLP picking up just one percent from whites. The PLP gets 48 percent of the black vote, with the OBA claiming 22 percent.

The PLP is more popular among female voters, taking 35 percent compared with the OBA’s 28 percent. Among male voters, 42 percent would vote OBA and 36 percent PLP.

Of the four politicians in the poll, the one with the most consistent support across the races is Mr Dunkley, who is supported by 55 percent of whites and 36 percent of blacks.

Mr Cannonier has the backing of 51 percent of whites and 33 percent of blacks; Mr Bean is backed by 57 percent of blacks and 26 percent of whites; Mr Burgess is supported by 32 percent of blacks and 11 percent of whites.

In addition to favourability ratings, voters were also asked to assess the Premier and political parties’ performances.

Twenty-four percent of people approve of Mr Cannonier’s performance as Premier, with the same proportion approving of the OBA’s performance since the election.

Twenty-seven percent approve of the PLPs performance since the election.

The telephone poll of 404 registered voters, carried out between November 17 and November 24, has a margin of error of 4.9 percent.
