Bascome poised to take the reins at Village

Kentoine Jennings? days as coach of North Village Community Club (NVCC) could be numbered, according to sources close to the FA Cup champions.

Although Village top brass have yet to divulge any potential successor for Jennings, former Reds player and current St.George?s Colts coach Herbie Bascome has emerged as a hot candidate to take over the helm of the team.

?I can?t comment at the moment until everything is finalised,? Bascome told strongly suggesting discussions are ongoing behind the scenes.

Bascome has been coach of St.George?s for the past several seasons.

In his first term on the job, Jennings coached Village to Charity, Martonmere and FA Cup glory ? not at all bad pickings for a rookie coach.

He has, however, made it no secret he would prefer to concentrate solely on playing rather than carrying the added burden of coaching.

Jennings said: ?There was a lot of pressure on me and sometimes I didn?t know if I was up or down. At times I didn?t feel I had the support as I thought I would have had being so close to all the players at Village. It kind of stressed me out at times and the worst time I had was when we were winning.

?Even though we were winning I wasn?t getting response from the players. But I?m really looking to play and that has always been my standpoint because I never really wanted to coach right now anyway. It was just something I did because we were having difficulty finding a coach at the time.

?But it hasn?t been bad and we are looking at our options as far as who is available or if anybody is available. And then we will make a decision from there.?

Village officials, meanwhile, were expected to address the matter during a special meeting last night and could offer a public statement by the end of the week, said NVCC president Shervin Dill.

Dill added: ?This is something we can?t really comment on at this point. We are certainly going to have to see what our position is for next year. Kentoine had a successful season and we did have some issues. But no decision as to a new coach has been made at this point in time.?

As to Bascome possibly taking over the reigns, Dill smiled: ?It?s much too premature but as soon as we have a sense of direction we will go public with our decision.?

PHC Under Nine goalkeeper Romario Foote was also selected to the Kappa Alpha PSI Fraternity Pee Wee Soccer Extravaganza All Star Team over the weekend.

All Star Awards were presented for individual excellence on the pitch during the annual event. Those receiving awards in the Under Seven age bracket were: Anthony Bailey Jr, Rayjuan Raynor, Jazz Rattery, Zhacobi Thomas, Daniel Cole, Osagi Bascome, Jahkeem Hunt while, Eli Smith, Quintoinio Lema, Shakhai Trott, Deondre Trott, Jahquan Smith-DeShields, Che Brangman and Foote were proud award recipients among the Under Nine division.
