Youth Camera Action: YCA Group Photo

Dany Pen has seen students in Youth Camera Action go from timid snappers to confident photographers. Now the general public can see their talent in an exhibit now on at the Bermuda Society of Arts.“Most came into the programme with very little to no photography skills,” said Ms Pen. “Students were able to gain more confidence and self-esteem at the end of the programme.”YCA is a free photography programme offered to middle school students at the Bermuda National Gallery. She said one of the rewards of teaching YCA is getting to see the students progress so they are knowledgeable about what they are doing. At the end of the introductory programme, students become comfortable with a particular photo setting and/or style.“The BNG encourage students who enter the programme to use art as inspiration for their photo taking sessions,” said Ms Pen. “Upon graduating from the programme, students leave with a set of photography skills that allows them to inspire themselves, their family and the community.”The current exhibit features selected works from 151 students. The BNG is also offering a YCA summer programme for middle school students of all skill levels. Cameras and supplies are provided. Space is limited to 16 students each week. Applications are available online, www.bermudanationalgallery.com/art-camps. The BSoA exhibit runs until July 4.
