Augustus gets back on track with title delight in Florida

Winning ways: Bermudian Daniel Augustus secured his fourth title on the Moonlight Golf Tour (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Daniel Augustus got back to winning ways after capturing his fourth title on the Moonlight Golf Tour at the West Orange Country Club in Winter Garden, Florida.

The Bermudian professional shot a bogey-free five-under-par 66, including four birdies on the front nine, at Monday’s 18-hole championship.

However, despite his stellar round, Augustus had to settle for a share of honours after Argentinian Facundo Delapenna also came in later at five under.

Summing up the event, Augustus said: “I was pleased with the round, not because I won, but because it was a bogey-free 66, five under.

“It wasn’t a perfect round by any means. But it was pretty clean. All 3’s and 4’s on my scorecard. Anytime you can do that it helps.”

Augustus denied an Argentine sweep of the podium as Delapenna’s compatriot Matius Lezcano finished third, a further two shots back.

The 33-year-old’s success arrives on the back of his maiden win at September’s Johnnie Walker Classic title at Ocean View, where he rallied from a seven-shot deficit during the final round to ultimately win by five shots.

It has also helped the Ocean View professional restore his confidence after falling shy of his bid to qualify for last month’s PGA Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course.

Augustus finished tied for sixth and then missed out on securing the third alternate spot in a five-man play-off at the PGA Bermuda Championship local qualifier at Port Royal, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Camiko Smith, Michael Sims and Anthony Phipps claimed the three qualifying spots up for grabs.

Augustus is using the disappointment as motivation to sharpen his skills.

“I’m using the disappointment of not qualifying for the Bermuda Championship to get better,” he added. “I’m trying to train and practise harder than before, and I was already a hard worker. I’m also working even harder on the mental aspect of the game.

“It’s only the beginning. I’m going to continue to work hard at this game I love that I’m blessed to play for a living.”
