Show Me The Money! Kumi Bradshaw's new book

Bermudian business consultant Kumi Bradshaw has written a book aimed at helping entrepreneurs with the challenges of evaluating and financing a business.

"Show Me The Money! Understanding the Value of Your Business" aims to answer some of the frequently asked questions put to Mr. Bradshaw by clients over the years.

The 80-page volume explains in succinct terms and plain language the basics of business valuation, business finance, buying and selling a business, the nuts and bolts of business partnership and special circumstances in the business life cycle.

The cartoon illustrations by Mike Ferrin add to the book's palatability for the layman in need of advice.

Mr. Bradshaw will be signing copies of his book on Friday at The Bookmart, at Brown & Co., in Reid Street, between 11.30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The former Royal Gazette columnist, who is the valuations director at Asgill Post Ltd., said: "From a fairly young age, I was always interested in business ownership and understanding what makes people tick.

"When I came back to Bermuda, I was looking to buy a business. But I saw there was an opportunity in the local market and in the US, to help people in business.

"There is a threshold you have to cross when you go from being self-employed to running a business. A lot of people are able to transfer a certain skill set, like driving a truck, into income. But there are also people who can build a business from some initial capital."

Mr. Bradshaw said the spirit of entrepreneurship in Bermuda was alive and well, and there were opportunities to be had, even in the current economy.

"One of the major changes I'm seeing is that a lot of bright young Bermudians are going into insurance and the corporate world," Mr. Bradshaw said. "That is certainly creating gaps and opportunities for others.

"Some of the more active businesses I'm seeing are cleaning and landscaping business, because people really need those services."

The local business scene was evolving, he said, with many Bermudians learning quickly how to utilise the Internet to promote their businesses.

Mr. Bradshaw's bossiness valuation and advisory experience includes small and medium size private companies in North America and central Europe, as well as Bermuda, in a variety of industries.

He is a Certified Business Appraiser (CBA) and a Business Evaluator Accredited for Litigation (BVAL). Mr. Bradshaw also currently serves as a member of the Accreditation Board of the Institute of Business Appraisers, to which he was elected in 2009.

He holds a bachelor's degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and an MBA with a focus on entrepreneurial finance from the FW Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
