60 Berkeley students earn certificates in technical fields
Dozens of Berkeley students were honoured yesterday for their studies in technical fields. In a ceremony at the school Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Kim Wilson gave around 60 students certificates noting their work, including numerous students who passed the National Centre for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum.Students in Grade two, three and four were able to achieve NCCER core certificate, an internationally recognised certification.Student projects, such as cedar lamps, clothing, and a boat were all on display, while Food and Nutrition students, who were also honoured during the ceremony, catered the event.Addressing the students, Sen Wilson said that technical roles are extremely important in keeping the Island running.“Oftentimes we hear that there is no technical training in Bermuda, but you are examples that it exists and it works,” she said.“It’s required, for our Island to be successful, to have people working in the technical fields.”She said that she had recently received work permit requests for the same fields the students were studying.“It’s wonderful to know that in a few years’ time we will not have to rely on the issuance of work permits because we will have Bermudians trained to fill those positions.”
